Scar Tissue: The Root of All Evil (in your body)

Did you know? Scar tissue is the root cause of many painful conditions such as: Arthritis, tendonitis, bursitis, joint stiffness, numbing, tingling and burning in hands and feet; decreased circulation and oxygen supply to soft tissue; chronic neck pain, frozen shoulder, carpal tunnel; misalignment of spine, herniated and bulging discs; plantar fasciitis, bunions; fibrous tumors, breast tissue inflammation, fake heart attacks; high blood pressure, shallow breathing…the list goes on and on! If you’ve been injured in the slightest way, you have scar tissue. The first responder to any form of injury great or small to your soft tissue is called “fibrin”. Fibrin builds fibrous tissue which we commonly refer to as internal scar tissue. This internal band-aid can be very helpful in the moment to assist the body in coping with damaged soft tissue. However, when it “overstays its welcome”, it is the root cause of chronic inflammation, shortened tendons and muscles, all leading to the tug of war on your joints! This adhesive, your body’s super glue, binds the muscle fibers limiting your strength and peak muscle performance. Scar Tissue forms 3 different ways within your muscles, tendons, ligament and joints. Instantaneous tearing of soft tissue: Caused from any injury, blow to any part of your body or accident. Fibrin comes to the rescue immediately and builds as long as you are in pain. Pain killers and anti-inflammatories (even natural ones) may fool you but they won’t fool your body! Gradual tearing of soft tissue: Muscles remaining over-contracted through exercise, or an overuse activity, will eventually become tense, loose oxygen as blood supply is limited and consequently shorten. Engaging in activities that continue to aggravate this shortened muscle will cause micro tearing within the muscle itself and eventually in the tendons where the muscle attaches to the bone. This gradual tearing still calls for scar tissue formation and happens behind the scenes without you even knowing. This is the most common way scar tissue is formed. Gradual buildup of crystalized acid resulting in the formation of scar tissue: Research proves you are what you eat and you are what you think. Your unhealthy physical and mental diet can cause acidity throughout your entire body which crystallizes within the joints and muscles causing inflammation and pain. Hormone imbalances and adrenal fatigue can also contribute to excessive buildup of acids within the soft tissue and joints leading to conditions such as Fibromyalgia and Arthritis.

What about inflammation in the joints? Let’s say you have been an avid athlete all your life with injured quads; either muscle tears, large bruises or both. You grew very fast and went through growing pains at some point in your childhood. You have also very tight calves and to kick it all off, you have sprained or strained your ankles numerous times. You are a wreck! After your injuries, you gave yourself time to heal (or not), followed through with physio and massage therapy, started a stretching routine, yet over time you begin to experience pain in your knee joint.

Your MRI shows no torn meniscus or ACL, leaving you with shortened quad and calf muscles causing a “tug of war” effect on your knee joint. These two muscles are pulling and aggravating your joint causing the buildup of acid. Acid eats away at cartilage and can damage the knee joint permanently. If you don’t effectively break down the scar tissue right away in the quad and calf muscles and their attachment points, you could be on the path to developing a chronic knee condition such as bursitis, arthritis or tendinitis in the tendons around the knee.

Even if you can’t feel this pull or pain yet, these short muscles will place your ACL and MCL in a vulnerable state of being stretched to the max. I do believe that many ligament tears are preventable for this very reason; although, not all are avoidable due to extreme impact or twisting. Scar tissue can hold other joints hostage in your body in the same way as the knee; from a finger joint to the vertebrae in your spine. Regardless of how your scar tissue forms, you are now left with the debilitating effects it can have on your body!

Are you ready to try something that works? You may change your diet to be more alkaline, increase your water intake, stretch, roll, go to massage therapists and/or chiropractors, add strengthening exercises to your physiotherapy plan, take anti-inflammatory's or pain killers, HOWEVER, if your scar tissue does not get broken down, it can lead to chronic conditions or haunt you later in life. Many conditions that are said to be “hereditary” can be preventable conditions if scar tissue is broken down effectively. You might be wondering why you used to feel pain and now you are numb to it but are still suffering with symptoms and conditions that have been listed?
